Choosing Picture Books for Your Child

Whilst most parents recognize the benefits of introducing their children to books at a young age, the sheer number of books available can make the selection of appropriate titles a daunting task. The following pointers should be considered when buying or borrowing books for your toddler.

Firstly, remember that reading should be fun both for your child and for yourself. The Text should be lively and easy to follow, with only one or two sentences per page, so that the story progresses quickly.

The rhythm of the story is also important. Read a few pages of the story aloud, or at least say them in your head. Stories do not have to be in verse, but should sound light and pleasant, rather than sober or preachy. If written in verse, check that it flows smoothly.

The appearance of the book is also important. Remember, children use the pictures to help them interpret and understand the story. The pictures should be attractive to your child. For most children this means big pictures with bright colors.

Consider buying books which focus on subjects your child is interested in. A truck loving boy may not enjoy a book full of pretty fairy pictures. remember, however, to try to expose your child to different subjects - whilst your truck lover may not come round to fairies, you may be able to interest him/her in dinosaurs.

A common trap to avoid is the presumption that the price of the book is an indication of its quality. There are very many cheap picture books which offer excellent text quality and a great many expensive books which will fail to appeal to toddlers.

Wise selection of books for your toddler can help to foster a love of reading in your child which will last a lifetime.

Comanche Moon

Comanche Moon
Texas Rangers Woodrow Call and Augustus McCrae pursue three outlaws, Comanche war chief Buffalo Hump, Comanche horse thief Kicking Wolf and a Mexican bandit king. Now in their middle years, they also struggle with their personal lives, Gus with Clara Forsythe, the love of his life, and Call with Maggie Tilton, the young prostitute who loves him. Meanwhile their partners-in-arms Deets, Jake Spoon and Pea Eye Parker help the Rangers protect the advancing western frontier from the defiant Comanches who are determined to defend their land and way of life. Prequel to Lonesome Dove, and based upon the novel by Larry McMurty.

Customer Review: A Bad western movie!

The acting and dialogue are bad. The file is slow and boring. The are no "fighting scenes" in the whole movies. What I mean is that in all those scenes, only one side was shooting at the other for a couple of minutes. Then it ended.

Save your money on this.

Customer Review: Excellent

If you love the Lonesome Dove series from Dead Man's Walk, Lonesome Dove, "Return to Lonesome Dove," and Streets of Laredo and then Lonsome Dove the series and The Outlaw years. Then your going to love Comance Moon. Now all we need is a better

Dodge Full-Size Pickups: 1974 thru 1993 (Haynes Repair Manual)

Dodge Full-Size Pickups: 1974 thru 1993 (Haynes Repair Manual)
Manuals for the Do-it-yourselfer All Haynes manuals explain how to carry out routine maintenance, restoration and servicing of cars and motorcycles, and are aimed primarily at the Do-it-yourselfer

Customer Review: It's the good manual.

I have the two manuals repair on these Dodge pick-ups,

The Chilton and this one, the Haynes. Openely, the Haynes is the best.

Customer Review: Better than nothing, but not by much

#1 word used in this book? "Typical"

#1 phrase used in this book? "Installation is the reverse of removal."

Perhaps I've been spoiled by the Bentley manuals I've picked up for my various Volkswagens over the years. Bentley manuals are so complete that you almost feel if you left the manual in the car over night IT would fix the car.

This book is so vague, its hard to know whether to trust the guidance it gives. There are some things you need specific information on, but this book only gives general instructions, and very little troubleshooting help. Again, its better than flying blind, but it could be much more comprehensive.

Customer Review: Design Flaws

I would rate this book in OK to poor category. The design is poor. Not worth for the price.

Customer Review: Great work-out tool

I always had trouble being organized when lifting. I do track and field at a high competitive level so it is important for me to track my progression - this book is great for that. I also bought a book for my boyfriend who had little motivation in the weight room, but now that he can follow his own progression he has gotten a lot more competitive with himself. I highly recommend this book to anyone at any level.

Spider-Man 3

Spider-Man 3
In Spider-Man 3 you'll get to enjoy being New York's favorite superhero, Spider-Man. For the first time ever, you'll also get to become his darker, more mysterious black-suited persona.Explore a larger, more dynamic New York City and experience multiple movie-based and original storylines. Choose your own gameplay in fully integrated city missions and performance rewards including improved speed, combat maneuvers and agility. Use completely revamped combat abilities as they protect the city and defeat nemeses using expanded aerial fighting, finishing moves and dynamic webbing during missions and epic boss battles.

Customer Review: Run, beat up thug, run, resuce, run, repeat.

The best thing about this game is the control scheme. Spider-man jumps and climbs and swings like a pro. It's a lot of fun to use the stylus to manipulate the web slinging, and it is very intuitive, so fighting thugs is fun and can be done in a number of ways.

The graphics are pretty good. I was impressed. It's a 2D game in a 3D world, and it feels natural to navigate through the city by web slinging.

The sound is kinda campy, but the voice acting from Toby McGuire is spot on. It's snarky and Spidy says oddball stuff at the right moments in the gameplay.

The only really complaint about Spider-man 3 is the repetitiveness. It's run, fight, run, fight, run, rescue, run, fight. On to the next level: run, fight, run, fight, rescue, run, fight. There are just over 20 chapters in the story, all consisting of a combination of run, rescue, and fight. It was like playing all of those CAPCOM games from the early nineties like "Final Fight".

There's also a gameplay mode called the "race", which consist of webslinging across the neighborhood looking for floating orbs (no reason is given for why Spidy is looking for orbs). There is a 5 second (yes, second) counter that starts and Spidy has to reach the first orb. The counter resets, and Spidy has to reach the next orb. There are usually 20 orbs in a neighborhood, and if you miss one, you start the whole thing over. Missing an orb is easy, and since you are given only 5 seconds to find it, you could restart the same level many times. I know this game mode was thrown in to offset the "Beat 'em up" theme of the rest of the game, but couldn't they think of something more original?

Customer Review: Decent

This is a solid game, just don't expect anything elaborate for a DS game. The story mode is short, but the use of the stylus in combat is cool. It is an enjoyable game.

Little Voice

Little Voice
For many listeners, Little Voice will be their first exposure to this soulful singer/songwriter, but it's actually Sara Bareilles' second record. Her first, the self-released Careful Confessions, led to a deal with Epic. Since then, Bareilles has opened for Marc Broussard and Maroon 5. She's also become a bonafide soundtrack queen with tracks featured in female-centric films Girl Play, Loving Annabelle, and Monster-in-Law. As with her out-of-print debut, the UCLA grad wrote every song on her first major label recording (Little Voice features re-worked versions of several demo numbers). Like the portrait on the back of the CD--Bareilles in strappy black dress and lace-free high-tops--the piano-playing chanteuse combines the sweet with the scruffy. While her jazzy pop melodies are radio-ready, her relationship-oriented lyrics can be unexpectedly salty ("Bottle Up" and "Come Round Soon" wouldn't pass FCC muster). A little profanity here and there, however, doesn't indicate tough-girl attitude--Amy Winehouse can rest easy--so much as a desire to express herself freely. As Bareilles explains in "Love Song," "I'm trying to let you hear me as I am." (Not surprisingly, her degree is in communications.) Fans of Sarah McLachlan and Alicia Keyes will find much to like here. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Customer Review: More than talented

Sara Bareilles has a voice of an angel, no doubt. Her songs, which consists of pop, alternative, funk, and soul genres make you want to sing along song after song. I love listening to her after a stressful day or school and work. Her voice really does soothes my "soul". There is no other better way to describe it. A must buy!

Customer Review: Beautiful voice!

This isn't going to be a very sophisticated review; nor is it necessarily objective. I loved the CD mostly because I really enjoy her voice; I find it nice and mellow and fun to listen to in the car. I heard her first on the Napster commercial and decided I had to have her CD, pure and simple. Little known artists need all the help they can get in the form of CD sales, so any type of illegal download is out of the question. I think America has to vote with their wallets in this type of situation.

And yes, I do believe others will enjoy her music as well, although I understand this style is not for everyone. So, if you liked her sound-bite on the commercial, you won't be disappointed by buying the full version.

No Country for Old Men (Vintage International)

No Country for Old Men (Vintage International)
In No Country for Old Men, Cormac McCarthy simultaneously strips down the American crime novel and broadens its concerns to encompass themes as ancient as the Bible and as bloodily contemporary as this morning’s headlines.

Customer Review: starts with a bang ends with a whimper

I'm not sure if I have ever read a book that had such an amazing start and that then became so bad. It went from 4 stars to 2. One of the main problems is that about three-fourths of the way through the novel there was a major turning point and from that point on the novel was so boring that I almost quit reading it. Perhaps McCarthy was trying to do something unique with the non-traditional story structure but it didn't work for me. I felt like the story was done 100 pages before it actually ended. I'm surprised to hear myself saying this but skip the book and see the movie instead.

Customer Review: No Reason to Read this Old Book

As a regional writer("Esther's Race", Cloquet River Press, 2007;ISBN 97809792175001), I am always willing to learn from a master. So when all the accolades came down from on high about Mr. McCarthy's brilliant prose, I had to pick up something he'd written and give it a go. So I trundled off to my local indie bookstore and bought a copy of "No Country", thinking that I was going to be in for a treat. Wrong, wrong, wrong. What I got was a book long on senseless violence and sociopathic brooding with none of the poinancy of say, "Silence of the Lambs." The story moves along as if the ultimate goal is to dishearten and disgust, not tantalize and excite. I for one can get plenty depressed and morose for a lot less money--by reading the daily newspaper--rather than wasting days and dollars on a novel that would have been rejected by any publisher but for the author's name attached to it. To be fair, I didn't want my first and only exposure to McCarthy's writing to be based upon this piece of tripe so I did the unthinkable and went back to the same bookstore and bought a copy of "The Road." Now that, ladies and gentlemen, is a fine novel. Written in starkness and with all the bleak shades of gray that McCarthy should have used in "Old Men" (where the only color of the rainbow is black) had he seen fit to write something worthy of posterity. "The Road" is everything that "Old Men" isn't: beautifully written, gloriously themed and supremely plotted. "The Road" is like the best of Neil Young's music--stark, mystical yet heartfelt. In comparison,"Old Men" reads like purposeless heavy metal noise.

Rothco Vintage Paratrooper Messenger Bag - Khaki

Rothco Vintage Paratrooper Messenger Bag - Khaki
Rothco Khaki Vintage Paratrooper Bag / Messenger Bag is a great bag for work, travel and school. Has a large main compartment and adjustable strap for comfort. Specifications: 15" X 11" X 4", hang tags

Customer Review: Great product

This is a great bag for school. I use it everyday to carry books and other things in it. Also, the three compartments on the inside makes it very easy to organize everything.

The only thing I have against the bag is that the strap is a bit too thin and it doesn't provide a lot of support if you are carrying a very heavy load.

However, other than that this is a very useful bag. Very much worth the price.

Customer Review: Quality Purchase......

This puurchase was a very good one, if I needed another one I would purchase another one, also the service was great............THANKS....
