eBooks: The Only Books?

Way back when the internet first learned to walk there was a famous aphorism encouraging it as it took each unsteady step: "Information wants to be free." Well, while the internet is not old by any stretch of the imagination, it is now upright, sturdy, and racing ahead, two legs strong and insisting: "Information wants to be on the internet!" The resounding boom of this proclamation initially caused other information-related industries--namely print media and publishing--to backpedal or just plain shake. Newspapers, luckily understanding the ramifications of the internet, quickly steadied their nerves and appeared online, first as supplements to their printed versions, then vice versa as their primary mode of distribution. Books, on the other hand, appeared slowly, initially at a crawl, but seemingly overnight are like the internet itself, already running.

In increasing numbers, books are now digitized; i.e. becoming eBooks. Though industry numbers vary, some sources already place eBook sales at 35% of the overall total of yearly book sales.

Book reviewers, likewise, increasingly shift their critical gaze away from traditional hardbound and soft-cover books to eBooks, which either appear solely in digital format, or as alternatives to their tangible world counterparts. And not only do eBook reviewers now regularly give resoundingly influential thumbs up or down to specific eBooks, but entire websites, including www.ebookreviews.net, are available to review, catalogue and otherwise provide information on eBooks in an increasing number of categories. In fact, the breath of reading materials contained within an eBook's pages already exceeds traditional (and at present most sought after, and thus lucrative) self-help eBooks to encompass even literature's canon (formerly only found gold-leafed and leather-bound) from Homer to Shakespeare.

Monster search engines, with Google? of course leading the charge (and Yahoo!, Microsoft's MSN, and bookseller Amazon.com in tow) are years into developing systems that will digitize the printed word. Despite copyright infringement lawsuits hurled like spears from traditional book publishers, steps have been taken to digitize several large libraries whose collections presently exist in the public domain (thus not subject to copyright law). Microsoft, for instance, is digitizing 100,000 such books from the British Library. Additionally, Random House recently became the first of the traditional publishing behemoths to realize their future, in part, relied upon selling eBooks, and began digitizing portions of their catalogue. Finally, Amazon.com is setting up a cheaper alternative, a "pay-per-view" system not much unlike checking books out of a library for a nominal fee.

In the future, many experts predict, if we read something, it will be read online and online only. Trusted offline information will be digitized to replace currently less trusted online information. Access to information will even be available for purchase piecemeal to accommodate specific needs and interests. Examples include a chef's recipe without his or her entire cookbook, a Bible verse without both testaments, a single chapter relevant to a student's research, and access to the foreign city a traveler will visit without lugging the guide for the entire country abroad.

But what is wonderful for the average Joe and Jane, Smith or Jones about the digitizing of information being but in its most nascent stages, is that opportunities abound for them to become primary movers and shakers, pioneering and (thus) profiting from this revolution. Now is the time to digitize the stores of information and know-how that you already possess. Don't know what I mean? Check out the wealth of information accumulating daily at www.ebookreviews.net to read how hundreds of others did exactly this: turned what they were good at or what interested them into an eBook now sold to and shared with likeminded people wanting to learn or benefit from another (and perhaps former!) Joe or Jane, Smith or Jones' expertise.

Otherwise, not interested in entrepreneurship? No problem. www.ebookreviews.net is still a wonderful place to begin your search for information. There are links to not only individuals selling eBooks they wrote, but to eBook exchanges and sellers promoting libraries worth of eBooks in an astounding number of diverse categories. Either way, you'll be onboard, running ahead with the knowledge that not only does "information want to be free" but it "wants to be online!"

Comanche Moon

Comanche Moon
Texas Rangers Woodrow Call and Augustus McCrae pursue three outlaws, Comanche war chief Buffalo Hump, Comanche horse thief Kicking Wolf and a Mexican bandit king. Now in their middle years, they also struggle with their personal lives, Gus with Clara Forsythe, the love of his life, and Call with Maggie Tilton, the young prostitute who loves him. Meanwhile their partners-in-arms Deets, Jake Spoon and Pea Eye Parker help the Rangers protect the advancing western frontier from the defiant Comanches who are determined to defend their land and way of life. Prequel to Lonesome Dove, and based upon the novel by Larry McMurty.

Customer Review: A Bad western movie!

The acting and dialogue are bad. The file is slow and boring. The are no "fighting scenes" in the whole movies. What I mean is that in all those scenes, only one side was shooting at the other for a couple of minutes. Then it ended.

Save your money on this.

Customer Review: Excellent

The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich

The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich
What do you do? Tim Ferriss has trouble answering the question. Depending on when you ask this
controversial Princeton University guest lecturer, he might answer:

“I race motorcycles in Europe.”
“I ski in the Andes.”
“I scuba dive in Panama.”
“I dance tango in Buenos Aires.”

He has spent more than five years learning the secrets of the New Rich, a fast-growing subculture who has abandoned the “deferred-life plan” and instead mastered the new currencies—time and mobility—to create luxury lifestyles in the here and now.

Whether you are an overworked employee or an entrepreneur trapped in your own business, this book is the compass for a new and revolutionary world. Join Tim Ferriss as he teaches you:

• How to outsource your life to overseas virtual assistants for $5 per hour and do whatever you want
• How blue-chip escape artists travel the world without quitting their jobs
• How to eliminate 50% of your work in 48 hours using the principles of a forgotten Italian economist
• How to trade a long-haul career for short work bursts and freuent "mini-retirements"
• What the crucial difference is between absolute and relative income
• How to train your boss to value performance over presence, or kill your job (or company) if it’s beyond repair
• What automated cash-flow “muses” are and how to create one in 2 to 4 weeks
• How to cultivate selective ignorance—and create time—with a low-information diet
• What the management secrets of Remote Control CEOs are
• How to get free housing worldwide and airfare at 50–80% off
• How to fill the void and create a meaningful life after removing work and the office

You can have it all—really.

Customer Review: Just what I was looking for.

This book is great, just what I was looking for. A step by step approach to making money.

Customer Review: Please.

This book could have been written by any of my ex-boyfriends. How to make it look like you're working hard while you sit around only thinking about yourself and taking advantage of everybody?

But I will give Timothy Ferriss a second chance if he can do the following: explain to me how and why his book illustrates the limit of capitalism using orthodox Marxist terminology. Then, convince me that this is good thing, still without resorting to corporate-speak, cliche, or neologism. Bonus: don't try to sidestep the question by arguing that my viewpoint is just the residue of an outdated paradigm.

That would be worth my time. This book was not. I read this book as a skeptic who was keen to be convinced. Needless to say, I am not.

Western Digital WDG1C3200N My Book Premium Edition 320 GB USB 2.0/Firewire400 External Hard Drive
The USB 2.0 and Firewire interface gives up to 480 Mbps transfer rates. 8.9 ms average seek time Automatic power-up, Safe Shutdown and LED activity lights make this drive easy to use Stackable metal case looks like a book and sits horizontally or vertically Compatible with PC and Mac Average Latency - 4.2 ms System Requirements - Windows 98 SE, ME, 2000, XP, Mac OS 9.2.2, X 10.2.8 or later, available FireWire or USB port

Customer Review: Great price for what you get

As the title says, it's a great price (right now, spring 2008) for what you get. 320GB and Firewire, which was my biggest point.

Customer Review: Great drive, poor backup software

I've had two of these drives for a little over a year now and they've been great. No noise, reliable and stable.

However, the backup software (EMC Retrospect Express HD) that came with them is horrible. It crashes Windows Explorer about once a day, and also takes the focus off of any window I happen to be working in constantly throughout the day. If I turn the software off none of that ever happens.

I've tried contacting their support and have been on their forums, but I've never received any help. If you're going to get this drive, make sure and use some other backup software because EMC's software is absolutely terrible.

This would have received a 5-star rating if it weren't for the software bundled with it.

Frank

Frank
With her debut album Frank, Amy Winehouse proves to be one of the most original, honest, and brave singer/songwriters to emerge in recent years. Over the course of the 13 songs, she manages to do everything required of a classic album. This is a stark piece of work, comprising husky, frequently sexually charged vocals, painfully honest lyrics and soft trumpets, laidback beats, and sparse guitar work. It seems that soulful jazz doesn't always have to be bland--it can also be playful, twisted, and arrogant ("Amy Amy Amy"). "F*** Me Pumps" charts a seemingly guilt-free act of infidelity: "What do you expect when you leave me here alone?" she asks coyly, as if by way of justifiable explanation. "You wouldn't want me to be lonely," she adds. You can't help warming to her, despite what she's saying. A unique sense of humour (how rare in music now) and a no-bull attitude make for an interesting, compelling debut. Frank? Yes, but refreshingly so. You wouldn't want her for a girlfriend, but as a life companion she may yet prove indispensable. --Cortman Virtue

Customer Review: Like Billie Holiday...

And no, I don't mean her voice. I mean the way you can hear her voice get a little grittier with every drink and drug, just like Billie near the end of her life. Her vibrato was harsh and forced and she couldn't hold the notes like she once could. And I see that happening with Amy...especially when you listen to Frank and then hear her sing Back to Black.

And, no one realizes that there's a song by Amy Winehouse called "Know You Now" and it was originally on this album. It is by far my favorite and NO ONE KNOWS about it. It has a very jazzy tempo and it's really tasty.

In comparison to each other, Frank is way better than Back to Black. In comparison to other artists, Amy Winehouse is better...even when she's at her worst.

Also, the amazon.co.uk reviewer got the song and lyrics WRONG...the song that had the lyrics "you wouldn't want me to be lonely..." is "I Heard Love is Blind" NOT "F*** Me Pumps."

Customer Review: Frank Is Better!

Frank is a fantastic CD! I bought Amy Winehouse due to hearing Rehab but I cannot tell you how much more I enjoy Frank. Her voice has a different quality on Rehab but Frank is a fresh album with great, fun lyrics! Thanks Amy for giving music a fresh new face and voice! Every mom should buy this album for her teenage daughter. I'm telling everyone about this album.

300 Movie Spartan Shield Phalanx

300 Movie Spartan Shield Phalanx
Honoring the amazing fighting prowess of ancient Greek warriors has lead to the creation of this awesome shield. Although the shield cannot withstand swords and axes, it has been constructed with the greatest detail. The shield has been constructed from a metal circular base with the poly resin fiberglass face, painted with thick acrylic paint. On the back of the shield is a flat black finish equipped with a handle and adjustable Velcro arm strap. Other display options include a stainless steel chain for easy wall-hanging. Providing a great accent to your Greek themed costume the Phalanx shield is a great buy, and will also be noticed amongst your weapons collection. Measures 24 inches x 24 inches wide, and 4 inches when laid flat.

Customer Review: 300 Spartan Shield Movie Replica

Great shield, can't get much better than this. Pretty much right out of the movie, lots of compliments. Very high quality, would probably work as a real shield in an attack. Perfect finish for that 300 costume

Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 1 TB Hard Drive

Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 1 TB Hard Drive
This elegant external hard drive, reminiscent of a book, is the perfect storage solution. It takes no more space than a paperback book. Collect two or more and they nest neatly together like volumes on a shelf. Installation is a snap because you don't really install this drive, you just plug it in and it's ready to use. A USB 2.0 simple connection offers convenience and compatibility among multiple computers. Dimensions - Height 6.5 x Length 5.4 x Width 2.1 Weight - 2.5 Pounds

Customer Review: One of the better ones around...

Design & Portability

I had 2 external HD's, which were 250GB and 150GB. It was in two different enclosures, so where ever I went, it was a real hassle carrying two HD's. MyBook is pretty compact with 1TB platter inside, helps slimming the width. Its piano black enclosure is really slick in HD design. I would give this HD the best design in its category. Very simplistic, no buttons, small slit of blue LED in front.

Out of the box

Everything was packed, there were no mounting the HD inside the enclosure needed, unlike my older HD's. I just had to plug and play, it was that easy!

Performance

I have used this for over a month and its performance is average. The specs is on the HD is pretty fast with 7200 rpm and 16MB buffer speed. I have always preferred firewire ports for external HD, because they pack more power which helps transfer data much faster than the USB 2.0's

I have a XP PC and I cant boot my pc if the HD is connected. I always have wait few seconds before the login screen shows up, then I connect the HD. (But if you use this with VISTA, there is no problem).

Whenever I exit from standby mode, my system recognizes the HD as if it was just plugged in... the autoplay becomes very annoying.

Software

The software which comes it it is completely useless. I would even go as far as to say dont even try it, save your energy! Its just a free trial. Download free back up software @ www.free-backup.info. It is much better than is included with the HD.

Price

I bought it for $[...] from amazon. I would expect more ports and features for this price. It does not provide great bang for your buck when competitors like Cavalry 1TB CAXM3701T0 which sells around $[...], have SATA cable and eSATA bracket (faster data transfer}!

Overall Rating: 3.5/5

Recommended:

Yes

Pros

Slick shiny design, Consumer friendly, Compact and portable (1TB platter instead of 2x500GB)

Cons

average data transfer only 1 USB port, average price, software is useless

The Bottom Line

Recommended for the average pc user, if you are advanced.. checking the specs highly advised.

Customer Review: Lot of room ,but a little slow

"I bought the 1tb drive to start backup my computer. It runs Win XP home edition. I had a little difficulties with it, but not too bad beyond that, the drive has a lot of room and finally not too hard to setup. My complain is that the hard drive comes with 32 FAT format, and changing to NTFS you lose preloaded software, and valuable time(over 4 hours formating the drive).

When I first used it I noticed it was not as quite as other said, but I was told some noise is okay. I am a little worried about the drive failing so I am a little cautious about committing to it for baking up now.

I thought it would be a little faster too, but I guess that's not a big deal."

Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia

Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia
This beautifully written, heartfelt memoir touched a nerve among both readers and reviewers. Elizabeth Gilbert tells how she made the difficult choice to leave behind all the trappings of modern American success (marriage, house in the country, career) and find, instead, what she truly wanted from life. Setting out for a year to study three different aspects of her nature amid three different cultures, Gilbert explored the art of pleasure in Italy and the art of devotion in India, and then a balance between the two on the Indonesian island of Bali. By turns rapturous and rueful, this wise and funny author (whom Booklist calls “Anne Lamott’s hip, yoga- practicing, footloose younger sister”) is poised to garner yet more adoring fans.

Customer Review: Open minded

I enjoyed this book. It is divided in to short sections so it's easy to put down and pick up again. I really liked her accepting attitude. She is open to other religions and cultures. She doesn't force her views on you. The fundamental Christians in my reading group did not like this book at all! Those of us who are more open minded and don't think we have all the answers enjoyed it.

Customer Review: I can't even finish this book!!

I can't stand this woman because she is so self-absorbed!! I can't even get through it!

The Spiderwick Chronicles (Boxed Set): The Field Guide; The Seeing Stone; Lucinda's Secret; The Ironwood Tree; The Wrath of Mulgrath

The Spiderwick Chronicles (Boxed Set): The Field Guide; The Seeing Stone; Lucinda's Secret; The Ironwood Tree; The Wrath of Mulgrath
It all started with a mysterious letter left at a tiny bookstore for authors Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black. Its closing lines: "We just want people to know about this. The stuff that has happened to us could happen to anyone." Little could they imagine the remarkable adventure that awaited them as they followed Jared, Simon, and Mallory Grace and a strange old book into a world filled with elves, goblins, dwarves, trolls, and a fantastical menagerie of other creatures. The oddest part is in entering that world, they didn't leave this one!

Five captivating books!

One thrilling adventure!

The Spiderwick Chronicles

Customer Review: Great Value!

Confession Time: I had never heard of Spiderwick until we saw commercials for the movie. I decided it would be a good pull to increase my daughters reading - she is on the Autism spectrum, and her reading interests are usually higher than her reading ability, she becomes discouraged and the book collects dust. I purchased the set with the agreement that only after we finished the books we'd go to see the movie.

We just got our set and I was so pleased to see that each book is hardcover and so beautiful in appearance. In the past we've ordered sets marked as hardcover and in fact they were talking about the box they are stored in :P. Last night we began reading, forgot about the TV and found ourselves halfway through the first book in no time at all. Even her 3yr old sister came in to listen. This morning while her baby sister watched TV - my older daughter was exploring the books, reading and looking through the pictures. They are a hit.

Now for the Great Value part. I called our local big chain book store (so I didn't have to wait for them in the mail) it was 67+ for this set . I couldn't believe it. I ordered it from Amazon expecting to wait a week or so to get it. With free shipping it was here in just a few days. I love a great price with great value!

Customer Review: Awesome series

This is a great book series for kids - especially boys. This is the second set I have bought, and I bought it to give to my son's school library!
